Over the last few years, there has been an increasing number of retailers that have discontinued “open 24 hours”.
While extra labour costs were minimized when the stocking-shelves person was cross-trained to also work as a cashier, the need to be opened 24 hours is diminishing. Fewer customers are visiting the stores in the early hours of the morning. Customers instead are ordering online and are receiving delivery when it is convenient for them. Also, an increase in shoplifting during the middle-of-the-night hours is another reason cited for reducing store hours opened.
