A startup company, Undertaking LA, is in the business of helping family prepare their own funeral services for lost loved ones that includes the A to Z guide of what to do and how to do it. Without much detail, processes are described that include dressing the body, keeping the body odor free, witnessing the cremation among many others.
While many would not even think of the doing funeral services themselves, others are considering it given the tremendous cost savings. The average funeral cost in the US is over $8,500 in 2014. The average cost to do-it-yourself can be less than $1,000.
Undertaking LA provides consulting services and at-home services to help families do it themselves. Advocates are claiming that this is a more natural, intimate end-of-life experience similar to other movements like home birth and hospice care.
Like in all businesses, the broader message is that funeral homes are going to have to find ways to compete in a marketplace where traditions are being challenged.
