Three law firms have filed a class-action suit against Costco and its shrimp supplier, CP Foods, seeking an injunction to stop the company from selling shrimp unless it is labelled a product of slavery.
An investigation last year discovered alleged horrific conditions connected to the farmed shrimp industry that include 20-hour shifts, regular worker beatings, and even torture and execution style killings. A resident of California who bought shrimp from Costco is suing the warehouse club because she purchased the product without knowing she was essentially supporting slavery.
Working conditions in some countries have been the subject of many criticisms against retailers including Apple. In most cases, including Apple’s, executives took immediate steps to ensure fair work practices.
